Fabric and Fit Guide: Velvet, Sequin and Denim at Jolins — What to Expect Before You Buy

· Jolins Fashions

Three models in full view wearing velvet, sequin and denim outfits - Jolins Fashions

Fabric is the part of online shopping that is hardest to judge from a photo. A dress can look perfect and feel wrong, or look plain and feel wonderful to wear all day. This guide covers the three fabrics you will see most at Jolins — velvet, sequin and denim — in plain terms, so you know what to expect before you order.

Velvet: soft, warm, and honest about fit

Velvet feels soft and looks rich, but it does not hide fit problems. If a velvet gown is too tight, you will see it. If it is too loose, it will look heavy rather than draped. Velvet pieces like the Leopard Velvet Fitted Evening Gown and the Burgundy Velvet One-Shoulder Evening Gown need a true fit, not a hopeful one. Velvet also holds heat, so it suits evenings and cooler rooms better than long daytime events. For care, hang velvet, steam lightly rather than ironing directly, and dry clean when the label says so. Folding velvet for a long time can leave lines that are hard to remove.

Sequin: sparkle that needs a lining check

Sequin looks festive, but the lining matters as much as the outside. A sequin top or dress with a rough inside will scratch and irritate, especially over a long evening. Check the product description for lining, and if you are sensitive, wear a thin layer underneath for the first wear to test it. Sequin pieces like the White Sequin Turtleneck Long Sleeve Top and the Champagne Sequin Bow Waist Maxi Dress are best kept for occasions, not everyday wear, because sequin can shed and catch on other fabrics in a wash. Hand wash or dry clean sequin, and store it away from delicate knits.

Denim: structured, durable, and size-sensitive

Denim holds its shape, which is why denim jumpsuits can look so clean. It also means denim does not forgive a wrong size as easily as a stretch knit. The Blue Denim Belted Flared-Leg Jumpsuit and the Black Deep V-Neck Belted Denim Jumpsuit both use a belt, so check the belt fit as well as the body fit. Denim softens with washing, so a new denim jumpsuit that feels very stiff will usually ease after a few wears, but a jumpsuit that is already tight will not magically become comfortable. Wash denim cold, inside out if possible, and hang to dry to keep the colour and shape longer.

Size and length: the two numbers that matter most

For gowns and jumpsuits, length and waist fit matter more than a general size label. Measure your waist where the piece is designed to sit, not where you think it should sit, and compare it to the size guide. For maxi dresses and wide-leg jumpsuits, measure from waist to floor in the shoes you will wear. A few centimetres of difference can change a hem from perfect to tripping hazard.

Frequently asked questions

Is velvet hard to care for?

It needs more care than cotton, but it is not difficult. Hang it, steam it lightly, and dry clean when the label says so. Avoid folding it for long periods and avoid direct ironing on the pile.

Can sequin be washed at home?

Sometimes, on a gentle cold cycle in a mesh bag, but dry cleaning is safer for most sequin dresses and tops. Check the label first, because sequin and glue do not always like water.

Does denim stretch out?

Denim with stretch will ease a little with wear, but pure denim holds its shape more. If a denim jumpsuit is tight in the waist or hips when new, do not rely on stretching to fix it.
